An image of beauty, side by side
Eyes closed, with an open mind
Shielded from bigotry, and ignorance
You can’t see the color of our eyes
The color of our tears is exactly the same
Our blood is red, and we are female
We laugh; share our pain, and struggles
Hope to gain, respect for who we are
Not, the color of our skin
It is but a shell to our humanity
A precious jewel, a black or white
Pearl

I set out to raise my children to be “color blind.” Halfway through I realized that it would be much better not to be color blind, but to be color appreciators. To embrace the differences and learn to depend on one another’s strengths and support one another’s weaknesses. Every racial slur, every slam, every time someone despises and puts down another culture we all lose.

That is the way I raised my children. To see the person and not the color of their skin. They learned well. I am proud of them. You are such a positive person.

Thank you – that means a lot. I kind of knew you were that kind of person from reading and commenting. God bless you, dear heart.

This is such a powerful poem, on a topic of the utmost significance. Discrimination, in any of its manifestations, cannot be permitted to thrive. We are all equal, and one – we are all simply human, and bound together inextricably despite our differences. Diversity is the essence of life.
