Jersey Devil

Having been born and raised in New Jersey, a creature named the Jersey Devil, is rumored to live, and roam the Pine Barrens. (The Pineys) as New Jerseyans refer to the location. The New Jersey Devil is described as having a horse’s head, hooves, wings, and a forked tail. There have been claims of sightings, dating back to the early 1800’s, the most recent in 2011.

This is a story that intrigues, and horrifies me. There was a group of teenagers, who decided to camp in the Pineys, for the weekend. They arrived at the campsite early, set up camp, had dinner, and were ready to sit around the fire, toast marshmallows, and tell tales. Of course the topic was the Jersey Devil.

One brave optimistic camper, named Sheryl Bee, picked up her flashlight and began walking alone to the bath house. Along the route, she heard, and felt a sudden a gust of wind. She wrote in her memoir, years later that she wasn’t spooked at first. She continued along and reached the bath house. Once she exited, the New Jersey Devil was perched in a tree. She was panic-stricken. Frozen in place, but let out a scream so spine chilling, it could be heard by every camper on site. She started running, as fast as she could. She ran into her friends, and hysterically told them of her sighting.

They jumped into their vehicle and headed home. She never returned to the Pineys. She still resides in southern New Jersey. Guess what?

 So does the Jersey Devil!
